Panel Session (Wednesday 17.45-19.30)

Is AI an existential threat to humanity? If so, in what way and what can be done about it?

Chair: Andrew Lea

This year, there has been extensive and high-profile discussion on the potential for AI to pose an existential threat to humanity, so it is a topical question for our panel and audience from academia, industry, and media to debate.

This discussion will ask:-

Is AI an existential threat to humanity?

Or is it a lesser threat, perhaps to employment or well being? How would such a threat come about?

If it does pose a threat, what can or should be done about it?

But perhaps this is too negative, so we will also ask:-

- Could AI help preserve humanity?
- If so, how? Perhaps by helping us understand and address global warming?
- If it could help, what can be done to encourage this?

The debate is intended to be interesting and entertaining. We will welcome opinions and questions from the floor.

Panel members will include

Daniel Bennett (Editor BBC Focus Magazine)
Prof. Max Bramer (Vice-President, International Federation for Information Processing)
Prof. Susan Craw (Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen)
Dr. Tim Glover (BT)
Prof. Lars Nolle (JADE University of Applied Sciences, Germany)
