Optimisation for a Sustainable Future: Driving Efficiency through Human-AI and Hyper-heuristic Search

Optimisation methods raise the prospect of driving efficiency across a wide range of problems in many sectors through the delivery of near-optimal solutions in logistics, scheduling, design, vehicle routing etc. Metaheuristics (e.g. evolutionary algorithms) have frequently been used to tackle these problems but more advanced approaches can use machine learning and human expertise to augment the metaheuristic search process.

In this talk, I will describe two such approaches, learning hyper-heuristics, and human-in-the-loop metaheuristics, applied to problems in the operational research and water distribution network design spaces, demonstrating how improved solutions to these problems can be generated by incorporating machine and human-learned knowledge.

The talk will conclude by describing some of our early work on the application of metaheuristic optimisation to real-world problems in sustainable transportation.
