SGAI has organised an annual international conference since 1981, as well as colloquia, evening lectures other events of many kinds. It has been a member of ECCAI, the European Co-ordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence since 1992. The group organised the IJCAI conference IJCAI-05 in Edinburgh, Scotland in August 2005. A substantial proportion of the Group's membership is from industry. It provides a valuable forum in which the academic and industrial AI communities can meet.

The Group covers technical advances in AI technology and shows how this leading edge technology has been applied to solve business problems.

Real Artificial Intelligence Day This event is designed to showcase practical applications of artificial intelligence, of particular interest to business and industry. This year's Real AI Day was on Friday October 5th 2012 at the BCS London Office (near Covent Garden). Copies of the speakers' slides are available on the Real AI website for downloading. BCS Machine Intelligence Competition The tenth BCS Machine Intelligence competition for live demonstrations of applications that show 'progress towards machine intelligence' was held on Friday October 5th 2012 at the BCS London Office. The competition was won by Simon Lucas and Diego Perez (University of Essex) for RAGA: the Rapidly Adapting Game Agent. The winner received a cash prize of £500 plus a trophy. PUBLICATIONS EXPERT UPDATE Expert Update is the Group's own publication. It was originally paper-based but is now fully electronic. The most recent issues include papers from the 11th and 12th UK CBR Workshops. AI Communications Journal Downloadable copies of all papers published in the ECCAI journal AI Communications from Volume 10 (1997) onwards are available from the SGAI Members' Area. DISCOUNTS FOR SGAI MEMBERS SGAI is a member of ECCAI (the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence) and this entitles our members to substantial discounts on events run by other national AI societies across Europe, as well as by ECCAI itself. For example the ECAI conference ECAI-12 held in Montpellier in August 2012 offered a 100 euro discount on the regular rate and a 30 euro discount on the student rate for members of BCS-SGAI. Non-BCS-members may wish to join BCS-SGAI just to take advantage of such discounts. This is easy to do by first joining the BCS. Further information is available from here.
