Dr. Alan Montgomery (Director, InferMed Ltd)

Data Mining in Practice

ABSTRACT

Alan Montgomery will explain the rationale behind the Clementine data mining tool and describe some of ISL's experiences in developing and marketing Clementine to the point when it became nominated as the Best Data Mining Product of 1998 by US-based Data Warehousing Tools Bulletin.

Alan will trace the path from selling Sussex's POPLOG AI toolkit to packaging machine learning into a form usable by business people. He will argue that for the majority of business problems, success in data mining came more from allowing business people to contribute rather than from the technical brilliance of the algorithms.

The talk will also touch on the issues of getting from AI research results to making money in the marketplace.

ALAN MONTGOMERY has degrees in Physics from Oxford and Sussex Universities. It was to analyse tracks of elementary particles in spark chambers that he learned Fortran - and got hooked on computing. His career included process control at CAP Reading and running the compilers group at ICL. After discovering Artificial Intelligence at Systems Designers, Alan and six colleagues started Integral Solutions Limited in 1989, selling POPLOG and other AI and Knowledge Management tools. ISL became the leading UK data mining vendor, creating the Clementine data mining system. In 1999, Alan sold ISL to SPSS.

He is now a Director of medical decision support company, InferMed.
