What is VAT?

VAT stands for Value Added Tax. This is a tax on sales of goods and services levied throughout the European Union. The detailed rates vary from one EU member state to another. In the United Kingdom the standard rate for those items on which VAT is charged was 17.5% up to November 30th 2008. It was reduced to 15% on Monday December 1st 2008. In the case of most services, VAT applies where the service is supplied (i.e. in the UK for the SGAI conference) and is not dependent on where the customer is located.

Organisations such as universities, as well as medium-sized and large companies in EU member states are generally VAT-registered. This means that although they must pay VAT when it is charged they may be able to reclaim it from their own national tax agency. Consult your employer (or your accountant if you are self-employed) if you are in any doubt about whether or not this applies to your registration fee for this conference.

VAT paid by individuals or organisations outside the EU cannot normally be reclaimed.
