Technical Keynote Lecture

Dr. Gilbert Owusu

Why don’t we get it right first time?

Abstract

AI is certainly responsible for quite a bit of societal change. However, a study by PwC found that 72% of executives believe AI will create significant revenue growth, but only 38% report actually achieving this. AI models are not infallible and require careful design, evaluation, and optimization to ensure their effectiveness and reliability. In this talk, I will elaborate on how operational research approaches can contribute to the development and deployment of AI solutions, as well as to the evaluation and mitigation of their risks and impacts.

Dr. Gilbert Owusu is a senior Data & AI leader, a Visiting Professor at the University of Essex and the immediate Past-President of the OR Society. He has a strong track record in applying AI and operational modelling technologies which have led to significant customer service improvements and OPEX reduction in operations. Gilbert’s work on applying AI technologies for transforming service operations have been published widely. He is co-editor of two books on service production management.
